So, you want to start a mailing list? Then read on. Consider the pitfalls. A list owner has to have excellent communications skills. This includes people skills and writing skills. How you are perceived by those who use your list will have a definite effect upon the quality of the posting there. Remember that when you have to step into the middle of a dispute, you aren't going to be popular with all sides. You could get flamed with email that fills your limits very quickly.
Why do you want to run a mailing list? Is it because you want to learn about running lists or because you really do want to have conversations about certain things. If you want to learn about running them, do it is a low key way with a few people you know. If you want to share information with people who have similar interests, then go ahead.
Never try to run a list by yourself. There will be times when you are away, too busy, or just too burned out to manage it. Set up a couple of friends (who are willing to support you) with list owner access so they can perform list owner duties in your absence.
Select a topic that is unique. Don't try to compete with an existing list unless that list is dying. In that event, try to come up with a fresh approach.
Select a name for the list that attracts the type of clientele you want to have. For just nice, friendly people, pick a positive sounding name. If you want a war group, pick a name that is more aggressive.
Finally, pick a service provider that has a rate scale that you are able to live with now and when your list grows. Try not to be moving it from server to server. Keep it all in one place if you can.
A Web page advertising your list can be helpful. Decorate it with .gif's of your users or other images relevant to your list. Also, list your list with services such as 'Liszt' and the America Online(r) list page.
